Mobiquity's Jonathan Stark: How Research to Develop Innovative Mobile Payment Solutions Led to "Jonathan's Card" Experiment

BOSTON, MA--(Marketwire - Aug 15, 2011) - The experiment in mobile social giving known as "Jonathan's Card" was born of research on mobile payment solutions by Jonathan Stark, Mobiquity's Vice President of Application Architecture. Mobiquity (www.mobiquityinc.com) is a professional services firm specializing in the design, build, deployment and analysis of innovative enterprise-class mobile solutions.

Stark developed the concept for his social giving experiment in "broadcasting mobile currency" as part of research he was conducting for a Mobiquity client. Stark first blogged about his experiment on July 14, where he described his surprise in discovering he could purchase a coffee simply by taking a screenshot of his Starbucks card barcode via his iPhone and emailing it to himself to use on his Nexus S Android phone(1). From the start of the experiment through its conclusion on August 12, individuals contributed upwards of $10,000 to the card's balance in the spirit of "paying it forward" and brightening a stranger's day with a free coffee.

"While 'Jonathan's Card' has proved to be fascinating social media experiment, the impact for our clients in shaping the way Mobiquity thinks of developing simple and secure new mobile payment apps can't be overstated," commented Bill Seibel, Mobiquity's co-founder and CEO. "We applaud what Jonathan has accomplished -- both in reminding people of the simple pleasures of small kindnesses, as well as his out-of-the-box thinking about new ways to leverage mobile computing as a paradigm shift."
