Marie Claire Releases Monthly Interactive Issue for iPad Powered by Zinio and Available on the App Store

Interactive 'Living' Magazine Cover Features Emma Watson

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwire - December 2, 2010) - Marie Claire magazine today announced its new Marie Claire App for iPad, powered by Zinio, now available in the App Store. This new monthly digital edition of the December issue is enhanced with a "living" cover, embedded videos, audio clips, interactive quiz, and user-controlled 360-degree views of featured items and accessories. The Marie Claire App, free for download, offers sample features from several recent issues and gives users the option of purchasing a single issue or a yearly subscription (the December issue is $3.50, subscription is $10/year) through In App Purchase.

The Marie Claire App for iPad is a completely re-created version of the magazine based on Zinio's new branded app solution that gives publishers control over the content of the app while still leveraging Zinio's UNITY distribution.

"We adore iPad because it allows us to bring a truly interactive experience to our readers and bring the magazine to life in a way we couldn't do before," said Joanna Coles, editor in chief of Marie Claire. "Our debut monthly issue app features the beautiful Emma Watson, and is filled with video, audio and interactive experiences that go beyond what we have offered in past digital editions."

The new Marie Claire App is designed specifically to showcase fashion and beauty products, accessories and clothing that readers love plus content exclusive to iPad, including:

  • A "living" cover where the subject is actually moving and not just a static photo. While other enhanced editions have incorporated video clips or outtakes, Marie Claire's iPad cover was created specifically to feature a living, moving Emma Watson that brings to mind the moving photos in the Daily Prophet, the newspaper in the Harry Potter novels, where Watson first gained international stardom. The cover remains kinetic on its own until the reader turns the page.

  • Exclusive extras not found in the print issue, including behind-the-scenes footage from Watson's photo shoot and streaming music clips throughout the app.

  • The ability to shop for clothing and accessories right from the editorial stories. Portions of the app are enabled with click-to-buy technology that allows users to view additional information about the products before making a purchase.

  • Bonus fashion content: There will be an iPad-only fashion video called "The Suitcase" that combines the glamour of gowns and the edginess of denim. The film features Twilight star and supermodel Noot Seear.

"With the new Marie Claire App for iPad powered by Zinio, we are excited to showcase our new enhancements and give readers the tools they need to make shopping for accessories and clothing more accessible," said Chris Wilkes, vice president of digital at Hearst Magazines.

The Marie Claire App is available for free from the App Store on iPad or at www.itunes.com/appstore. The December and subsequent issues ($3.50) or a yearly subscription ($10) are available through In App Purchase using the app's 'Shop' tab.

The new magazine app follows the success of Marie Claire's first app for iPad, the Fall Fashion A-to-Z App, which launched in October and was designed specifically to showcase fashion on the iPad with 360-degree views of more than 150 fashion items. The app was custom built by digital services agency iCrossing and offers users exclusive experiences including click-to-buy fashion, videos straight from the runway and fashion trends from professional stylists.

This holiday Marie Claire will also launch another app for the iPhone called "Shop the Shoot." This new shopping guide will give consumers the opportunity to download the application to their iPhone for free and then search for products by category (i.e. shoes, apparel, etc.), trend, or special editorial section guides (i.e. '101 Ideas,' 'Shop the Shoot,' etc.). The app will offer a mixture of products selected by Marie Claire's editorial team and advertising partners as well as a geo-targeted retailer and online finder.
