Librestream Announces a Community Stroke Rehabilitation Project Using Its Onsight Mobile Collaboration System in Ontario

"Tele-Rehab: Improving Access to Quality Stroke Rehabilitation in Rural and Remote Communities"

WINNIPEG, MANITOBA--(Marketwire - Dec. 5, 2008) - Librestream, the leader in Mobile Collaboration solutions, is pleased to announce that the Northwestern Ontario Regional Stroke Network at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre was awarded funding from the Ontario Stroke System for a research project to improve access to stroke rehabilitation care in rural and remote communities. This project will include the use of Librestream's Onsight mobile collaboration system to assess and provide rehabilitation services to patients in their homes.

The objective is to provide equitable access to care in remote communities. Community Homecare workers will be able to use the Librestream Onsight mobile collaboration device on the Ontario Telemedicine and Kuhkenah Networks (OTN and KNet) to send live video of the stroke survivor in their home directly to stroke rehabilitation specialists located at the St. Joseph's Care Group regional rehabilitation hospital in Thunder Bay, Ontario.

Esme French, Physiotherapist and Regional Stroke Rehabilitation Specialist with the Northwestern Ontario Regional Stroke Network, states, "Librestream's Onsight mobile collaboration system is one tool that can be used to help people living with stroke achieve their maximum potential and have equitable access to service regardless of where they live." Ms. French continues, "The innovative use of telemedicine technology will build capacity in, and improve access to, stroke rehabilitation services across Northwestern Ontario."

Timely and consistent stroke rehabilitation is a critical part of recovery. Providing stroke rehabilitation services in the patient's home community and residence can improve access to care in many of the regions within the Ontario Stroke Network as well as the Canadian Stroke Strategy.

Esme French concludes, "The current service delivery model is unable to meet the needs of those living in rural and remote communities. Mobile telemedicine-based alternatives can be one solution to improve the overall quality and timeliness of care."

"We applaud the Ontario Stroke System for funding such an important initiative. The vision of the Northwestern Ontario Regional Stroke Network, Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, and their supporting partners, is one of the future. We are pleased to be a part of an initiative that can make such a difference in the lives of stroke survivors by providing care directly in their home," stated Mark Ahrens-Townsend, EVP of Business Development at Librestream.
