Government of Canada Invests in the Cultural Sector in Nova Scotia's South Shore

LUNENBURG, NOVA SCOTIA--(Marketwire - Aug. 9, 2010) - The Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, today announced funding for 15 arts, heritage, and community projects in Nova Scotia's South Shore. Minister Moore made the announcement during a visit to Lunenburg, in the presence of community representatives.

The funding is intended to support a wide range of projects, including the Mi'kmaq Acadian Cultural Festival and Reunion, the restoration of Chester's First Municipal Office, and many others.

"The investments being made by the Government of Canada in arts and culture in this region of Nova Scotia constitute an important engine for the local economy and will generate significant improvements in the quality of life of local residents," said Minister Moore. "I want to thank all the people who put their talents to work on behalf of the community and make this town a great place to live."

The Government of Canada has provided funding totalling $305,549 under two programs of the Department of Canadian Heritage: the Canada Arts Presentation Fund and the Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage program. To find out more about the projects, see the attached backgrounder.

Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage

The Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage program provides Canadians with more opportunities to take part in activities that present local arts and culture and celebrate local history and heritage.

  • Privateer Days 2010, Liverpool - $30,000
  • South Shore Exhibition , Bridgewater - $19,500
  • Queens County SeaFest, Brooklyn - $13,600
  • 250th Anniversary of the Settlement of Chester Basin and Area,
     Chester Basin – 2010–2011 - $12,444
  • Harmony Bazaar Festival of Women & Song, Lockeport - $7,400
  • South Shore in Motion 2010, Bridgewater - $6,700
  • Seafest Lobster Festival and Parade of Lights, Yarmouth - $ 6,500
  • Mi'kmaq Acadian Cultural Festival and Reunion, Lahave - $6,300
  • Chester Art Festival, Chester- $5,300

Canada Arts Presentation Fund

The Canada Arts Presentation Fund is designed to give Canadians increased access to the variety and richness of Canada's culture through professional arts festivals and performances, and other arts events.

  • Musique Royale – A Treasury of Music from our Heritage Past, province-wide – 2010–2011 and 2011–2012 - $42,000
  • Lunenburg Folk Harbour Festival, Lunenburg - $30,000
  • St. Cecilia Concert Series, Halifax and Lunenburg - $23,500
  • Chester Playhouse Presentation Series, Chester - $7,000
  • Astor Theatre – This Is Canada, Liverpool - $6,555
