Correctional Service of Canada: Norovirus at Regional Psychiatric Centre
REGIONAL PSYCHIATRIC CENTRE, SASKATOON, SASKATCHEWAN--(Marketwire - Jan. 28, 2009) - Following a series of tests performed by Saskatoon Health Region, Health Services staff at the Regional Psychiatric Centre (RPC) this morning confirmed a case of Norovirus (Norwalk) in one inmate.
Staff at RPC contacted Health Officials with the Health Region last week after eight inmates displayed flu-like systems that included vomiting and diarrhea. The institution was quickly placed on modified routine with inmate movement limited and the temporary suspension of contract work. In consultation with the Saskatoon Health Region, RPC staff acted quickly to contain the virus. As of this morning, no additional symptoms related to Norovirus were being reported. In order to avoid spreading the virus, one unit at the institution remains on restricted movement.
The Correctional Service of Canada extends its appreciation to the Saskatoon Health Region for its assistance in this matter.
Maintaining the public health of staff members, inmates and the general public is a key priority for the Correctional Service of Canada. Information regarding the spread of viruses such as the Norwalk virus has been circulated among staff and inmates at RPC along with guidelines regarding the importance of preventative measures such as handwashing.
The Regional Psychiatric Centre is a multi-level psychiatric hospital located in Saskatoon, SK, and operated by the Correctional Service of Canada. The Centre provides assessment, intensive programming, treatment for mental disorders and 24-hour medical care to inmates. There are currently 178 patients receiving assessments and/or treatment at RPC.
