TORONTO, ON / PRESS RELEASE--(Marketwire - July 29, 2008) - Just as a new study by Johns Hopkins University suggests that the US may be facing a hearing loss epidemic due in part to personal listening devices, a new generation of parents and responsible adults are looking to Canadian company CoreMicro's recently launched SafeVolume earbud to protect themselves and the ones they love.

The SafeVolume earbuds feature a patent-pending, sound limiting technology and won a 2008 iParenting Media Award. Retailing for the affordable price of $19.99, CoreMicro's SafeVolume earbuds are available at Loblaws, Real Canadian Superstore, Atlantic Superstore and also via Dell Canada Online.

"When hearing is damaged or lost, there's no way to get it back. These earbuds will reduce the numbers of hearing impaired children coming to see us in the future - and we can only imagine how many kids will be grateful to their parents for protecting them against a preventable source of hearing loss," says Dr. Blake Papsin, MD, MSC, FRCSC, FACS, FAAP, Cochlear Americas Chair in Auditory Development, Paediatric Otolaryngologist.

The study by John Hopkins University released on July 28 estimated that as many as one in three Americans is suffering from hearing loss, an increase in part attributable to MP3 players played at unsafe levels. And every year, emergency room doctors see far too many accidents, some fatal, because MP3 users simply couldn't hear their surroundings.

The Canadian Hearing Society estimates that almost one in four Canadians reports some kind of hearing loss.

The noise-reducing feature of the SafeVolume device cannot be removed or tampered with, an important consideration when sounds above 85 decibels for eight hours or more can result in hearing damage. Unlike software, which can be deleted, the technology behind SafeVolume cannot be circumvented.

CoreMicro's SafeVolume earbuds look like any other standard headset with two small earbuds that fit snugly in the ears - but with one big difference. A small circuit in the earbud wire prevents sounds from exceeding 85 decibels - about the level of city traffic - no matter how high the music player is turned up.

The earbuds have independent verification from audiologists that the product caps sound at the 85 decibel threshold.

Founded in 2001 and headquartered in Toronto, CoreMicro offers top quality, innovative, technologically driven products at competitive prices with exceptional customer service. A leading distributor of flash memory cards used in cameras, cell phones, music players and other electronic devices, CoreMicro kicks off its newest division, Playsafe, with the launch of its SafeVolume earbuds.
