Bikers Choose Looks Over Safety
MANCHESTER, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - Sept. 28, 2009) - Over three quarters of bikers choose helmets based on how they look, rather than the protection they provide, according to a survey by Swinton Bikes.
A poll of 2,000 motorcycle insurance customers, found that 73% said that the first thing they look for in a helmet is aesthetics. However, of those, 98% said that they would not buy a helmet unless it was approved by the Department for Transport (DfT.) Worryingly though, 17% of those in the poll said that they would consider buying a second hand helmet, if they really liked the look of it.
Only 21% said that how the helmet fits was the most important factor when making a purchase, while as 22% said that they had purchased a helmet online, without ever trying it on first.
A very safety conscious 71% said that they would replace their helmet if they dropped it on the floor.
Swinton Bikes advises all motorcyclists:
- Only by a helmet that is DfT approved
- Never buy a second hand helmet
- Make sure the helmet fits properly - a helmet that is too big may come off at high speeds or in the event of a collision
- Try on a variety of shells to find the right style for you head
- If buying a helmet online, try it on for size at a local dealer first
- Dropping a helmet compromises the structural integrity and should be replaced immediately
Anthony Aronin, Head of Swinton Bikes, said: "When it comes to motorcycling safety should be paramount. We would urge anyone who rides a motorbike to make sure that they purchase a DfT approved helmet from a reputable dealer. Although we appreciate that looks are important, they should never be put before safety."
