World's Largest Hockey Tournament's Championship Games Continue Wednesday

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Dec. 31, 2008) - The 10th annual Bell Capital Cup, the world's premier atom and peewee hockey tournament, continues with nine of the final 16 championship games on Wednesday, Dec. 31. The 2009 Bell Capital Cup will come to a close on Thursday, Jan. 1, with the final seven championship games at the Bell Sensplex (Mattamy Homes arena).

The 485 participating teams are vying for the Allen J. MacDonald Memorial Trophy as tournament champion. The Bell Capital Cup welcomes teams from all over the globe, including 69 entries from the United States, as well as teams from China (2), Finland (3) and Germany.

Three division champions were crowned on Tuesday, Dec. 30:

Girls atom AA - Oakville Hornets

Girls peewee AA - Kanata Rangers

Boys major peewee AAA - Guelph Jr. Storm

Nine champions will be crowned on Wednesday, Dec. 31 in the following boys' divisions: peewee major AA, peewee major A, peewee minor AAA, peewee minor AA, peewee minor A, atom major AAA, atom major AA, atom minor AAA and atom minor AA.

The remaining seven champions will be crowned on Tuesday, Jan. 1 in the following boys' divisions: peewee house A, atom major A, atom major B, atom minor A, atom house A, atom house B and atom house C.

Bill Patterson Trophy winners

Wednesday, Dec. 31, 11:55 a.m. - Bell Sensplex (Mattamy Homes arena)

The Bill Patterson Trophy is awarded to the two teams (one house league team and one competitive league team) that demonstrate fair play and sportsmanship by recording the fewest penalty minutes during the round- robin portion of the tournament. The trophy is awarded in memory of Bill Patterson, who passed away Sept. 22, 1999, of a heart attack. Bill Patterson was a well-respected member of our community. A sportscaster for CJOH TV, Bill was an active family man and is survived by his wife Pat and daughters Sherri, Meghan and Sarah. His true love was watching and reporting on young athletes and he was Ottawa's number one booster of amateur sports.

Wednesday, Dec. 31 - Bell Sensplex (Mattamy Homes arena)

The Bell Sensplex Ottawa Senators Hockey School Scholarships are presented to one player from each of the teams that win the Bill Patterson Trophy, which this year are the Leitrim Hawks C1 atom house C team and the Kanata major atom B Blazers. Players who demonstrate hard work, fair play and good sportsmanship as selected by their coaches will have an opportunity to attend the Kanata-based hockey school during July or August. The two recognized players will spend a week receiving the very best in on-ice instruction from the professional staff of the Bell Sensplex. They will also participate in other sports such as basketball and soccer during the week.

Allen J. MacDonald Championship Trophy

Wednesday, Dec. 31; Thursday, Jan. 1

After each championship game at Bell Sensplex

The Allen J. MacDonald Championship Trophy is awarded to the victorious team in each division at the end of the Bell Capital Cup. This trophy receives its name from our generous title sponsor, Bell Canada, and is presented in memory of longtime Bell employee and Bell Capital Cup supporter Allen MacDonald. The trophy symbolizes the teamwork, dedication and effort required for success. Each winning team will receive a miniature version of the Bell Capital Cup to take home, a championship banner to display in their home arena and individual Bell Capital Cups for all players on the team. Players from the winning teams will also receive a Bell Capital Cup Nike Dri-Fit T-shirt in addition to a championship patch that may be placed on their jerseys or hockey bags for the remainder of the season as souvenirs of their victory.

Bruce M. Firestone Award

Wednesday, Dec. 31; Thursday, Jan. 1

After each championship game - Bell Sensplex

This award is presented to the finalists in each division following championship games. Each of the finalists will receive a take-home trophy and a silver miniature version of the Bell Capital Cup for each player on the team. Bruce M. Firestone was the original founder of the modern Ottawa Senators. Dr. Firestone resides in Ottawa and takes an active interest in minor hockey, including his regular attendance at the Bell Capital Cup. The trophy that bears his name is emblematic of hard work and a "won't back down" spirit.
