Appointment to the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Feb. 4, 2011) - The Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, today announced the appointment of Athanasios Pentefountas as Vice-Chairman (Broadcasting) of the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission).

"I am delighted that Mr. Pentefountas has agreed to join the CRTC," said Minister Moore. "I am certain that his leadership, extensive knowledge, and strong legal background will be great assets to the CRTC."

Mr. Pentefountas, who was admitted to the Quebec Bar in 1996, is a partner in the Montreal law firm Silver Sandiford. He holds a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Ottawa and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Concordia University in Montreal.

Mr. Pentefountas has worked with a number of organizations, including as a member (since 1998) and vice president (2005–2007) of the Montreal Hellenic Chamber of Commerce (an affiliate of the Montreal Chamber of Commerce), and as a member since 2007 of the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association, a charitable fundraising organization.

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission is an independent public authority that regulates and supervises, in the public interest, all aspects of the Canadian broadcasting system, as well as telecommunications service providers and common carriers that fall under federal jurisdiction.
