CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - July 4, 2012) - The Canadian Legacy Project is thrilled to announce the successful Event Launch for the 1st Annual Calgary Seniors Walk today. To help kick off this inaugural event, some special guest speakers were in attendance, including Mayor Naheed Nenshi, Wayne Cao, Calgary MLA-Fort and Alana DeLong, Calgary MLA-Bow and Chair, Seniors Advisory Council for Alberta.
The 1st Annual Calgary Seniors Walk, in support of The Golden Age Club, will take place on August 30th on Stephen Avenue Mall. The event is being designed to not only raise funds, but raise awareness for seniors. "I hope it raises a lot of awareness not only for seniors living in poverty in the East Village, but for seniors living in social isolation and poverty across the city", stated Mayor Nenshi in this morning's Event Launch. All registered teams and participants, under the age of 65, will walk the event route wearing their bright yellow shirts and balancing an egg on a spoon - to signify the difficulties seniors have getting around day to day. Mayor Nenshi's hope is for the general public watching the event on August 30th to think, "What's that all about?" He states, "That's really important here. It's not just about raising all the money, but it's really people stopping and thinking, 'Hey! What would it be like to balance an egg on a spoon all day and try to run my life doing that at work?'". Mayor Nenshi concluded by expressing his gratitude for the creation of this unique event and wishes it to be "enormously successful" this year and for years to come.
Also in attendance was local MLA for the East Village area, Wayne Cao. In his address to the media, Mr. Cao said, "I promise that I will be there", and committed to helping promote the event to the best of his ability over the next couple of months through social media and talking with people within the communities in his riding. Alana DeLong states in her address that, "seniors are a foundation of this province and are incredible role models for all of us". It was very clear that the City of Calgary is extremely supportive of this new initiative to raise awareness of seniors in our communities.
The Canadian Legacy Project and The Golden Age Club encourages everyone of all ages to join them on August 30th to celebrate seniors and show support by participating in this unique event, the 1st Annual Calgary Seniors Walk.
