10gen Announces MongoDB Version 1.6.0
Latest Release of the Open Source MongoDB Database Introduces Automatic Sharding for Improved Horizontal Scalability; Replica Sets for High Availability
NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwire - August 5, 2010) - 10gen, the company that started the MongoDB project, today announced version 1.6.0 of the open source database. This release introduces automatic sharding for horizontal scalability and high availability through replica sets. Auto-sharding allows users to easily distribute data across many nodes. Replica sets enable automatic failover and recovery of database nodes within or across data centers.
"With built-in support for horizontal scalability, version 1.6.0 allows our users to build and grow their applications more rapidly," said Dwight Merriman, co-founder and CEO of 10gen. "Deploying with MongoDB reduces time to market and provides flexibility to innovate."
Several companies already use auto-sharding in production, including the location-based social networking company foursquare and the url shortener bit.ly. foursquare moved all checkins to MongoDB from PostgreSQL. bit.ly, a service with 50 million users and 12.5 billion shortens per month, stores the history of every shortened url in MongoDB. Other major production users of the database include the New York Times, Etsy, SourceForge, and Shutterfly.
"With foursquare's growing popularity, we were fast approaching the point where it would no longer be feasible to store user checkins on a single physical machine," said Harry Heymann, Engineering Lead at foursquare. "MongoDB's auto-sharding capabilities enabled us to easily transition to a multi-node cluster that will enable us to continue to grow for the foreseeable future."
MongoDB is an open source, high performance, non-relational database, and the leading technology in the NoSQL space. Downloads of the database exceeded 50,000 in the month of July. Adoption of the database is also evidenced by sold-out conferences in San Francisco, New York City, London, Paris, and Seattle with aggregate attendance of over 700 people; similar events are scheduled for Boston, Berlin, Chicago, Silicon Valley, and more.
About 10gen
10gen develops MongoDB, and offers production support, training, and consulting for the database. The focus of the MongoDB project is to combine the best traits of the non-relational or "NoSQL" model, including high scalability, performance, and ease of development, with important features common in traditional databases, such as dynamic queries and indexes. 10gen is funded by Union Square Ventures and Flybridge Capital Partners.
