Correctional Service of Canada: Inmate Assault at Drumheller Institution


DRUMHELLER, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - July 12, 2012) - At approximately 5:20 p.m., on July 11, 2012, an inmate was assaulted at Drumheller Institution, a medium-security federal penitentiary. The injured inmate was immediately assessed by staff and taken to an outside hospital. The extent of the injuries is unknown at this time. The victim is reported in stable condition.

No staff or other inmates were injured during this incident. The aggressor has been identified and appropriate action has been taken.

The Drumheller Detachment of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) are investigating the incident.

The institution has not had any changes to the normal routine.

Ensuring the safety and security of institutions, staff, and the public remains the highest priority in the operations of the federal correctional system.

In order to improve its practices to prevent and reduce future incidents, CSC will continue to work in an effort to review the circumstances surrounding the incident and take action where necessary.
